Ukraine's non-GM corns reaches India despite supply concerns

About 40,000 tonnes of Ukrainian corn had reached the hands of India's state-controlled trader, PEC Ltd, despite claims that it would be challenging to source non-genetically modified (GM) crops.

"PEC has received a cargo of about 40,000 tonnes. Of the contracted 250,000 tonnes, the rest are on their way from Ukraine," said a source directly involved in the deal.

The shipment is India's first such overseas purchase in 16 years, Reuters reported. In an international tender competition launched in January, the trader awarded a contract to South Korea's Daewoo International for a 250,000 tonnes delivery of yellow non-GM corn.

GM food crops is currently not legalised in India.
