Malaysia to develop aquaculture industrial zone in Sarawak

The Malaysian state of Sarawak is expected develop an aquaculture industrial zone in Lawas, the northernmost district in the state.

Deputy Chief Minister, Tan Sri Alfred Jabu, said, the zone would cover the Awat-Awat Resettlement Scheme, Kampung Punang and Sundar area in the district.

At a press conference after officiating a briefing on the National Agrofood Policy 2011-2020 here, he said the three areas were well-known for fishing and downstream fishery activities.

"Having Brunei, Labuan and Sabah as its neighbours, a big market is already available to supply the products (from the proposed zone),"he said.

According to him, the Sarawak Agriculture Department had already deployed experts to conduct a study on the proposed zone and the state would be bidding for funds from the Federal Government to start the project.
