Cargill Pork completes conversion to group housing for sows

Cargill Pork, LLC, has concluded a conversion programme that involves a major change to group housing for sows at the company's farms in the US.

The completion puts Cargill Pork 11 months ahead of its original deadline of December 31, 2015.

Previously, the US pork operations of Cargill had kept 50% group housing in its farms.

Following the acquisition of a 22,000 acre hog farm in the Texas Panhandle near Dalhart, during 2011, the company invested US$60 million in improvement works of the site and managed to achieve 100% group housing converted from sow barns.

In the meantime, the deadline for conversions to group housing at contract farms containing Cargill Pork sows remains as December 31, 2017.

Hogs produced by these sows take up about 30% of the total animals harvested yearly at Cargill's two processing plants.
