Selangor, Malaysia poultry farm shut down following multiple fines
A poultry farm in Selangor, Malaysia, blamed for fly infestation affecting nearby residents, will be closed after being fined three times for violations, said the state government.
The farm is located in Tanjong Sepat, Kuala Langat.
Selangor housing and culture committee chairman Borhan Aman Shah said some poultry farm operators have not taken residents' complaints seriously, Bernama reported.
Borhan, who is also the Tanjong Sepat assemblyman, said several parties – namely the veterinary services department, local authorities, the environment department, the land office, poultry farmers, and community representatives – had previously discussed the issue.
"One solution reached at the time was that action would be taken against farms that do not comply with regulations. Farms that have been fined or compounded three times must be closed," he told reporters on January 20.
He was responding to a news report about the disruption to daily life for about 500 residents from 104 families, caused by fly infestation over the past three years, believed to be linked to the poultry farm.
Borhan said authorities had trained poultry farmers on proper management practices, including the use of insecticides, but the farmers had reverted to old methods, resulting in the ongoing infestation.
"We have no objection to them running poultry farms, but they must be mindful of the residents' problems" he said.
Borhan added there are 11 poultry farm operators in the area.
