Mountaire Farms 1st chicken producer to get One Health Certified seal

Mountaire Farms has become the first chicken company in the US to be awarded with the seal of approval by One Health Certified, a comprehensive animal care programme that establishes verified animal production practices in five core areas, namely disease prevention, veterinary care, responsible antibiotic use, animal welfare and environmental impacts.

Mountaire Farms, the nation's sixth-largest chicken producer, successfully completed audits in all of its production facilities including hatcheries, feed mills, grow out and harvest plants last November 2019, Delaware Business Now reported. The US Department of Agriculture verified that their practices met the One Health Certified standards.

"It was important to us that we participate in a holistic and ethical programme that strives for optimal health outcomes for animals, consumers and the planet", said Don Ritter, director of technical marketing for Mountaire Farms.

"One Health Certified successfully avoids the trade-offs and unintended consequences of more narrowly focused programmes, which may at times put animal health and welfare at unnecessary risk", he added.

Phillip Plylar, president of Mountaire Farms, described their company's achievement as "a positive move forward for animal agriculture".

"This programme provides transparency, increased areas of accountability, covers multiple proteins, and does it all with one label. This is something our customers have been asking for and we believe is the right thing to do for them, the animals in our care, and for the environment".

Mountaire and, for that matter, other companies that may meet the One Health Certified standards and pass an audit administered by the USDA qualify for the right to label their retail and wholesale products with a logo that states responsible animal care practices have been followed and verified.

Mountaire Farms has facilities in the states of Arkansas, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina.
