Bahrain bans livestock company from importing meat

Bahrain has suspended the permit of a local meat importer found selling expired chilled meat products.

The country's Directorate of Agriculture and Marine Resources said that during a surprise inspection of the Bahrain Livestock Company (BLC) compound, food safety authorities found expired chilled meats which have just arrived from other countries.

The directorate said Bahrain Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa has ordered an investigation into BLC's operations.

Pending the investigation, it added, BLC won't be permitted to import meat products, regardless of where they come from, for its failure to impose stringent food safety measures for the products being delivered from other countries.

The directorate said it ordered the suspension of BLC's import permits to protect public health.
