Ukraine lifts EU beef, veal imports ban

Ukraine has lifted its ban on beef imports from the European Union after it had agreed to recognise the EU single system of control on BSE ((bovine spongiform encephalopathy) or mad cow disease and the official sanitary status of EU member states based on the BSE risk category of the World Animal Health Organisation (OIE) for imports.

The European Commission earlier had been requesting Ukraine to follow the OIE recommendations related to BSE and lift its ban on EU beef including bone-in beef.

The lifting of the ban on EU beef imports came after the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement between Ukraine and the EU came into effect on Jan. 1, 2016.

Early last year Ukraine initially lifted its ban on boneless beef from member states France, Denmark and Poland, making the first step to be in line with OIE standards.

In November 2015, Ukrainian inspectors visited the Netherlands as an example of BSE negligible risk country and the following month Poland as an example of BSE controlled risk country.

Both audits had positive outcome so that Ukraine granted the authorisation of exports of boneless and bone-in beef and veal from all the 28 member states of the EU.

Ukraine also said it would follow OIE standards in the setting of Ukrainian animal health and public health standards.
