Hong Kong, China authorities put down pigs following detection of ASF at Yuen Long farm

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) in Hong Kong, China, has initiated the culling of pigs after samples collected from a Yuen Long pig farm tested positive for the African swine fever (ASF) virus.

AFCD announced on January 10 that at least three of the 11 pig samples taken from the farm tested positive for ASF virus. The Department immediately suspended transportation of any pigs from the farm since then and arranged the culling of pigs.

AFCD also inspected three pig farms within three kilometers of the index farm and collected pig samples for ASF testing, with movement of pigs on those pig farms being suspended until further notice.

Meanwhile, no reports of abnormalities from those pig farms outside the three-kilometer zone have been received so far.

Lawmaker Steven Ho Chun-yin stated that the sudden loss of over a hundred pigs in a day would not significantly affect the overall supply in the city, especially since the supply of pigs at the end of the Lunar Year is usually higher.

Ho also added the AFCD discovered ASF in a wild pig in Tai Po last November, believing the virus may have been transmitted by wild pigs and urged the Department to strengthen efforts to drive away wild pigs in the area.
