*Commonly referred to in China as liquid methionine is methionine hydroxyl analogue, a liquid source of supplemental methionine.
Market analysis
As live poultry markets in some regions were shut down due to the prevention of bird flu spreading, native breed broiler market stayed weak. Sales of methionine shrank amid slower poultry feed consumption. This, coupled with ample availability and a soft soymeal market, dragged down the prices of methionine.
In Europe, prices of methionine for 2017 Q1 deliveries were in the range of EUR2.40-2.50/kg.
Market forecast
While farmers tread prudently, sales of animal feed and hence methionine are unlikely to strengthen prominently in the coming weeks before the long Chinese New Year. Methionine market is poised to stay weak amid lacklustre demand. However, at current levels, prices are less likely to fall by a lot.
