Dutch pork exports up 8% in Jan-Sept

Dutch pork exports in the first three quarters last year increased by 8% to 638,700 tonnes, compared with the same period in 2014.

In terms of value, however, exports in the nine-month period fell by 4% year-on-year to €1.19 billion as the average unit price of shipments from the Netherlands decreased by 11% year-on year.

The EU remained the main destination for Dutch pork but its share of exports was below 80%, as shipments to non-EU destinations increased more than those to the EU.

Italy remained the largest individual country market, accounting for 17% of all Dutch pork exports.

Germany was the second-largest individual country, as it imported 89,000 tonnes of pork, or 12% more than last year, while Greece emerged as the third-largest destination and the UK the fourth-largest, increasing by 2% and 4% respectively.

China main growth market

China was the main growth market outside the EU, as shipments to that country increased more than six-fold. South Korea recorded a 46% increase from 2014. Australia imported 13,900 tonnes in January-September, or 34% more Dutch pork than the year before.

Dutch exports to Japan were down by 2% year-on-year at 20,000 tonnes.

Live pig exports declined by 41% to 4 million head, compared with the same period in 2014.

Numbers of weaners and slaughter pigs decreased by 46% to 2.5 million head and 29% to 1.3 million head, respectively.
