Poultry and mutton prices in India up 20%

Prices for organic chicken and fish have also increased between 15% to 20%, with prices for broiler chicken and eggs reported to have gone up 12% to 13%, reported Business Standard.

Broiler chicken prices are up 150 to 160 INR (~US$2.10 to US$2.24; 1 INR = US$0.014) per kilogramme from 130 INR (~US$1.82), and mutton is currently at 600 INR (~US$8.41) per kilogram compared to 500 RS (~US$7.01) one month prior.

Meanwhile, the National Egg Coordination Committee have reported prices for eggs have hit 515 INR (~US$7.22) for 100 numbers in Mumbai, up from 496 INR (~US$6.95) previously.

Shahnaz Thanawala, Bombay mutton dealers association president said increased demand from South Indian states and insufficient supply has pushed mutton prices up considerably, with local consumers finding it difficult to purchase the meat.

Ramesh Khatri, poultry federation of India president said poultry farming costs have increased because of surging feed prices. He notes a 15% to 20% cost increase for soybean, corn, oilmeal and bajra. Smaller poultry farms have also closed as banks rejected loans, he added.

He also said broiler chicken production costs have gone up from 65 to 70 INR (~US$0.91 to 0.98) per kilogramme a few months back, to 85 to 90 INR (~US$1.19 to 1.26).
