US food companies' preference for quality beef highlights certification's importance
In light of the changes Wendy's and Tyson will make, a BQA certification would be crucial for farms seeking to be relevant in the beef market. With buyers increasingly aware of animal welfare, the certification affirms that livestock are handled without experiencing excessive stress, according to Haley Shoemaker, a BQA instructor.
"It's another way for us to say we've done our part. You can trust in this product. It's been raised in a respectful manner," Shoemaker said, adding that while the certification is not mandatory, there is now a growing importance on obtaining BQA, especially when selling meat to major companies like Wendy's and Tyson.
Cattle farmers who want to qualify for BQA have to take steps to protect herd health, maintain good records and raise cattle under optimum environmental conditions.
Chad Bailey, manager at Matthews Cattle Co., expected more meat buyers will look to getting only BQA-certified beef following Wendy's and Tyson's decision. This shift in preference of meat sourcing was induced by consumers who want to know they are putting in their bodies.
