Scottish Sea Farms steps up sustainability drive with farming restructure
December 3, 2019 Scottish Sea Farms steps up sustainability drive with farming restructure Scottish Sea Farms will restructure its farming operations to help accelerate progress towards the salmon producer's goal of setting the benchmark for sustainability in its sector. The news follows an announcement back in September that long-standing production manager John Rea will leave the business to pursue his passion for personal development and coaching. Scottish Sea Farms managing director Jim Gallagher said: "Our business has evolved hugely during John's 20-year tenure: from the number of locations and regions we farm in, to the innovative new approaches we're adopting and the range of skill-sets we employ. Learning that John was to leave us seemed like the natural time to review how we do things currently and what else we could be doing to better equip us for the future. "As part of this review, we decided to divide what formerly the remit of production director into two distinct roles: regional manager

RAS specialist, Israeli investors to set up 10,000-tonne salmon farm in Vietnam
November 25, 2019 RAS specialist, Israeli investors to set up 10,000-tonne salmon farm in Vietnam Israeli investors and a firm specialising in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) are planning to build a 10,000-tonne Atlantic salmon farm and processing plant in Vietnam with a local partner, Undercurrent News reported in early November. The plan is to raise over $100 million to build the hatchery, RAS farm, and processing plant on a 10-hectare plot of land in an industrial zone south of Dan Nang, to produce salmon for Vietnam and the rest of Southeast Asia, and China. AquAgro Projects, a company based in Singapore backed by Israeli entrepreneurs, has teamed with a Vietnamese group, Dong Nam Investment and Technology Development Company, on the project, named SEA Aquaculture. Lighthouse Finance, a seafood asset-based lending firm in the process of raising €1 billion (US$1.1 billion) for its own fund, is involved on the funding side. Norway's salmon farmers guiding for increased harvest volumes next year
November 22, 2019 Norway's salmon farmers guiding for increased harvest volumes next year Norway's salmon farmers are guiding for a 7.5% increase in harvest volumes in 2020 - somewhat higher than consensus expectations among analysts, said SpareBank 1 Markets' Tore Tonseth. "As usual, they indicate somewhat higher growth...Representing close to 40% of the global production, expected harvest in 2020 sums up to 7.5% year-on-year – compared to Kontali at the 4%-mark and [SpareBank's] global supply estimate of 4.3%," Tonseth said. Aggregated volume guidance was three percentage points higher than consensus last year as well, when actual 2019 volume is looking likely to come in just one point higher than consensus and two points lower than the aggregated guiding, he added. Standing biomass as of the end of September 2019 was on track for 6.7% growth year-on-year, albeit due to higher average weights. "For Norway, the listed farmers see around 9.1% growth next year, compared to [SpareBank] at 4%. It is prima

Cermaq cooperates with Labeyrie, IBM to improve salmon traceability
November 21, 2019 Cermaq cooperates with Labeyrie, IBM to improve salmon traceability With a QR-code and blockchain technology, consumers can now get information in text and photos regarding the farming location of a salmon, the food it was fed, and other information, Cermaq said as it announced its cooperation with salmon brand Labeyrie to improve traceability and transparency. "Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the origin of the food they eat. At the same time, there is an increasing concern whether the (salmon) is safe to eat and if it has been produced in a sustainable way," Cermaq said. "All Cermaq salmon [sold] is accompanied by… comprehensive information about the fish, its origin, when it was hatched, which fresh water facility it came from, how big it was when it was transferred to seawater, at which sea water facility it has been farmed, as well as health and welfare information such as which vaccinations it has received, what it has been fed, and when it was harvested." Mowi likely to cancel investment in Irish salmon sector over frustrations with licensing
November 20, 2019 Mowi likely to cancel investment in Irish salmon sector over frustrations with licensing Mowi has suggested that it will revoke plans to invest €22 million (US$24.2 million) in the Irish salmon farming sector, due to their frustrations with the country's licensing system. Jan Feenstra, managing director of Mowi Ireland, told the Sunday Independent that the current licensing system meant that plans to build new sites of Ireland's west coast, which could create over 100 new jobs, have been mothballed due the glacial pace of the existing system. "The investment has been channelled to other countries," he told the paper. "Unless we can secure the correct licences, that money is not going to be invested into the industry," Feenstra said. He went on to question the viability of country's entire salmon sector. "If this doesn't improve in a few years' time, I don't think the industry will survive here. Some 10,000 tonnes will probably be produced in Ireland this year; our largest site in N

BioMar at event in Portugal highlighting sustainable stewardship of oceans
November 20, 2019 BioMar at event in Portugal highlighting sustainable stewardship of oceans At the Sustainable Brands Oceans event in Porto, Portugal, on November 19, Alexandra Cousteau, an environmentalist and advocate for the world's oceans, launched her Ocean 2050 campaign outlining the blueprint for restoring abundance to the oceans. She has partnered with companies including BioMar to activate projects designed to create a blueprint for the oceans by 2050. During the event, she outlined a plan for how industry can use the ocean while also protecting it. Cousteau highlighted the growing and farming of seaweed which offers opportunities to create a sustainable food source for both humans and animals. In fact, many strains of seaweed are able to absorb and capture carbon and several nutrients that are bi-products of aquaculture farming. "Our oceans have so much to give and we are underutilising them. We can farm aquaculture offshore and plant various strains of macroalgae that are full of vital nu
