MLBA Issue 12 : Innovation, reinvention and investment in Asian meat processing
Reconcepting MEAT & LIVESTOCK BUSINESS Asia
Due to rapid growth in global agribusiness output volume and technical sophistication, we find it necessary to expand the scope and breadth of our coverage.
From January 2011, MEAT & LIVESTOCK BUSINESS Asia and FEED Business Asia will merge and be renamed as FEED Business Worldwide. The magazine will be published 10 times a year.
To be successful, investment strategy must be flexible and be able to adapt to sudden market changes. A textbook response to lower consumer demand will not do.

MARKET
Statistics from the USDA, World Bank and other sources imply that in order to survive, Asian agribusiness must stop emphasising cost economies and adopt a new meat and livestock paradigm. Singapore, Japan and Korea show the way forward.
Although China's animal drug industry has grown considerably, it is still far from being mature. The main source of the animal drug producers' income was still the government's investment.
With the global recession brewing, 2009 started ugly for Thailand's poultry sector. A month before, chicken prices had plummeted. Will 2010 reverse the succession of setbacks?
SUPPLY CHAIN
Lawson Software Asia strengthens its presence in the ERP market with its simpler, yet fully integrated traceability system - the Lawson Trace Engine - covering the entire supply chain from "field-to-fork."
INDUSTRY
Thailand's CPF forecasts 5-10 percent sales growth; Danish Crown's beef division reports profits; Fonterra sells AFF stake to Arla ; Pas Reform signs agreement for new hatchery hygiene; Sovereign Foods invests US$9.3 million in poultry business.
SANOVO Technology launches new egg pasteurisation technology; Biocote introduces anti-microbial crates for poultry.
Tyson appoints new CEO; Cobb expands technical service team in Asia.
LIVESTOCK HEALTH
Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) causes an acute and highly contagious viral respiratory disease of chickens which is characterised by respiratory rales, coughing and sneezing.
MEAT OPERATION
Two of the major concerns in the meat industry today are food safety and inconsistent meat quality, especially tenderness. Thus, a commercial method to ensure consistently tender meat products is of primary importance.
COLD CUTS
China's hog and broiler inventories shrank about 10 percent since December 2008. The consolidation in the livestock industries this year has, however, formed a new platform to support a recovery next year. MEAT & LIVESTOCK Business Asia talked to Shi Tao, eFeedLink's senior analyst on his insights on China's livestock industry performance.
Global Grain & Oilseed Markets
Evidence that USDA got its South American feed crop numbers wrong and large downward revisions are looming is growing. This carries greater implications for corn prices than it does for soy.
