Tyson appoints new CEO
Tyson Foods Inc. has appointed Donnie Smith, the current senior vice president for the poultry and prepared foods group, as the new Chief Executive Officer and president.
Smith succeeds Dick Bond, who resigned in January, and Leland Tollett, who was called back to the company to be its interim boss during the executive search. Tyson chairman John Tyson also announced that Jim Lochner, currently senior vice president for the fresh meats group, will become Chief Operating Officer.
Tyson said Tollett would stay with the company to assist Smith and Lochner in their transition and to provide strategic advice and support.
Smith joined Tyson Foods in 1980, working first in live poultry production and commodity purchasing and then in several management positions.
Lochner joined IBP inc. in 1983 as director of research and then held several management positions in quality control and technical services before becoming IBP executive vice president and CEO in 1997 and president and CEO in 2000. Tyson Foods acquired IBP in 2001 and Lochner took over the company's fresh meats operations.
