China will import more than 3 million tonnes of pork by end 2019
The country's commerce ministry forecasts pork and pork byproducts imports will surpass 3 million tonnes before the end of the year, with meat imports exceeding 6 million tonnes total, reported Reuters.
This estimation from China's commerce ministry coincides with the same projection by Rabobank. Rabobank anticipated China's pork imports will be between 3.1 million tonnes to 3.3 million tonnes in 2019, more than the highs achieved in 2016.
The African swine fever outbreak in China has eradicated swine herds in the country. The government has swiftly approved more meat plants overseas for imports as a way to supplement dwindling meat supplies in the country.
