Vietnam live hog prices on downtrend in October

Market analysis
 
In October 2018, in the north, live hog prices were down by VND4,000 (US$0.17) to VND7,000 (US$0.30) per kilogram to range from VND45,000 (US$1.95) to VND50,000 (US$2.17). In the south, prices decreased by about VND1,000 (US$0.043) per kilogram to range from VND51,000 (US$2.21) to VND53,000 (US$2.30).
 
According to data from the General Statistics Office, the pig herd size across the country rose 2.1%. Pork output was estimated to increase 2.8%, equivalent to 834,200 tonnes.
 
Based on a report from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the value of food products from swine hit US$31.99, down 51.4% compared to the same period of 2017. 
 
 
Market forecast
 
According to customs data, live hog prices in the next few months would remain at a relatively high level due to the influence of African swine fever. However, in the short term, live hog prices would be continuously down to the range of VND40,000 (US$1.73) to VND45,000 (US$1.95) per kilogram.
