Nooyen to introduce new standard in free-roaming farrowing crates at EuroTier

Press release

Nooyen Pig Flooring will introduce the WellFarrowing pen at the EuroTier 2018 in Hannover, Germany. Visitors of EuroTier can find the Nooyen stand in hall 16, stand F04.

The WellFarrowing farrowing crate of Nooyen Pig Flooring is setting the trend in the free-roaming farrowing crate market. Due to the presence of a balance system, Nooyen's WellFarrowing farrowing crate is the only free-roaming farrowing crate that achieves the same technical results as a conventional farrowing crate.

Built-in Balance floor

The new WellFarrowing farrowing crate provides more animal welfare and a higher efficiency. With the built-in revolutionary Balance floor, the survival rate of newborn piglets is maximised and piglet mortality is a thing of the past. Only after the sow lies down, the height difference disappears and can piglets drink safely and undisturbed from their mother.

Hygiene and living comfort

WellFarrowing also proves that hygiene and living comfort can go hand and hand. Sows can roam freely on a soft-coated steel slat. Because the special coating is somewhat compressible, sows have sufficient grip. With an opening of more than 50 percent, the manure drain is optimal and the hygiene assured. Moreover, on the soft-coated floor, the young piglets preserve their undamaged knees. Piglets remain healthy and there is less chance of contracting infections. WellFarrowing meets all modern requirements when it comes to animal welfare and the reduction of antibiotics use.

More and more countries

More and more countries are imposing demands on the way in which maternity sows are housed. In Switzerland and Sweden, free-roaming farrowing crates for sows are mandatory. Austria is making it mandatory starting in 2033. Starting in 2020, in Denmark, 10 percent of sows must be able to roam freely in the farrowing cage. In 2035 this will apply to all sows in that country. Although primarily Western European countries are committed to this method of housing maternity sows, the expectation is that in the long term other countries and supermarket chains will impose additional requirements on the way in which maternity sows are housed.
