Market analysis
 
The price of live hog in September declined slightly across Vietnam. Specifically, the price of live hog dropped VND1,000 (US$0.04) to VND2,000 (US$0.09) per kilogramme in Hanoi, Hung yen, Nghe An and Dong Nai. In the central part of the country, the price of live hog in Quang Tri and Thua thien hue fell VND500 (US$0.02) per kilogramme, ranged from VND29,000 (US$1.28) to VND32,000 (US$1.41) per kilogramme. In the south, the price of live hog was reduced by VND500 (US$0.02) per kilogramme in Tien Giang, VND1,000 (US$0.04) per kilogramme in Long An, and VND1,500 (US$0.07) per kilogramme in Hau Giang. The current price of some provinces in the south was around VND28,500 (US$1.25) to VND30,500 (US$1.34) per kilogramme. In some area of Dong nai, the price declined by VND1,000 (US$0.04) to VND2,000 (US$0.09) per kilogramme, at about VND31,000 (US$1.36) per kilogramme, depending on the quality of live hog.
 
As the price fluctuated during the period, famers hesitated to expand farms. Small farms suffered too much losses to reinvest into their sites. Meanwhile, big farms struggle to keep their businesses afloat.
 
Hogs in the country for September is estimated to be down 4.2% compared to same period of 2016. The output of hog meat in the month is estimated to reach 2,732 thousand tonnes, up 2.0% compared to same period of last year. Of that amount, the output of hog meat in the third quarter of 2017 hit 522 thousand tonnes, down 2.3% compared to third quarter of 2016.
 
Market forecast
 
The price of live hog is expected to decline further with the coming rainy season and just as seafood supply is more sufficient and cheaper.
 
The supply of live hog is expected to hit 41 million hogs in 2018. This figure is higher than 2017 but just occupied 75% of 2016.
 
Imported hog meat is expected to increase slightly due to the elimination of import tax for such products and the commercial agreement between EVFTA and AEC.
