Vietnam shrimp prices tend to grow

Market Analysis

 

For months, the price of shrimp in the Mekong Delta tends to rise sharply, especially tiger giant prawn which sees an increase of VND20,000 (US$0.88) per kilogramme compared to the previous month. Specially, the price of tiger giant prawn in Bac lieu, Ca Mau, are bought by traders for the following prices:  type 20 pcs per kilogramme from VND260,000 (US$11.44) to VND270,000 (US$11.88) per kilogramme, the type 30 pcs per kilogramme from VND225,000 (US$9.90) to VND235,000 (US$10.34) per kilogramme, type 40 pcs per kilogramme from VND180,000 (US$7.92) to VND190,000 (US$8.36) per kilogramme. For white leg shrimp, the price for type 40 pcs to 100 pcs per kilo is from VND104, 000 (US$4.58) to VND195,000 (US$8.58) per kilogramme, an increase of VND5,000 (US$0.22) per kilogramme compared to the previous month.

 

The value of exported shrimp in September 2017 hit US$313 million leading to a value of US$2,656 million for nine months in 2017, a 18% increase compared to same period last year.

 

Area for raising shrimp in the country for nine months is expected to reach 696 thousand hectares, up 4.4%. The output is expected to hit 468 thousand tonnes, up 27.1% compared to same period in 2016.  Area for raising shrimp and output in the Mekong Delta increased. In particular, the area for raising tiger giant prawn for nine months in 2017 hit 584 thousand hectares, up 3.8%. The output reach 188 thousand tonnes, up 11.3% year-on-year. The area for raising white leg shrimp reach 73 thousand hectares, up 16.1%. Output hit 216 thousand tonnes, up 43% year-on-year.

 
 

Market Forecast

 

The price of shrimp is expected to rise further next month as it is the rainy season in Vietnam. Thus, supply will face shortage in this season.
