New frontiers in animal nutrition technology at AB Vista's Feed Intelligence Conference, Asia

 

 

 

AB Vista hosted its first Asian Feed Intelligence Conference in Seoul, South Korea on 18th and 19th of September 2019. The event was by invitation-only for AB Vista's customers and distributors from the region, including Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, South Korea, China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Myanmar and Singapore.

 

 

At the start of the conference, Mr. Ari Kiviniemi, Director of Business Development and ASPAC Sales at AB Vista, highlighted that one of the key challenges facing the industry right now is how to optimise the use of limited resources. This is important for reducing nitrogen and phosphorus pollution, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, minimising disease outbreaks, whilst simultaneously optimising performance and profits.

 

"AB Vista held the Feed Intelligence Conference to bring together the leading scientists and companies in animal nutrition and health with the objective of delivering a better understanding of ingredients and their requirements in animal nutrition, in order to extract more value from fibre and improve nutrient availability," Mr. Kiviniemi highlighted.

 

On the first day, two specific areas of technical focus were addressed. The first session "Dietary fibre and gut health" explained the roles of different fibre fractions and their impact on gastrointestinal health in monogastric animals. "Dietary fibre is the least understood nutrient. The importance of fibre as a source of healthy commensal microbiota in the gut is gaining more attention recently, as the use of antibiotics and heavy metals are limited or banned," Dr. Jae Cheol Kim, Technical Manager of AB Vista Asia Pacific pointed out.

 

The second session "Ca, P and phytase" addressed recent findings on digestible calcium and phosphorus concepts and the interaction with phytase in monogastric animals. "Calcium and phosphorus are two macro-minerals that are not adopted digestible nutrient concepts in formulation. Recent research from the University of Illinois and Massey University published digestible calcium contents in selected ingredients in pigs and broilers. Although the digestible calcium database is not fully ready for commercial adoption, this session raised the awareness in variability of calcium and phosphorus digestibility in monogastric animals," Dr. Kim shared.

 

On the second day, the conference continued with species-focussed sessions related to broiler, piglet and sow nutrition, aimed at how to address the nutrient requirements of animals as genetic selection advances, for more lean meat yield, and more piglets born per litter.

 

Training the microbiome for improved fibre fermentation

 

In his presentation "SIGNIS: New Frontier in Fermentation", Dr. Tiago Santos, Global Technical and Marketing director, AB Vista, took the opportunity to introduce a new product, SIGNIS, that was launched during the IPPE Expo in Atlanta, US in February this year. SIGNIS accelerates the development of a fibre-degrading microbiome, enabling the fermentation of fibre sources that would otherwise remain undigested, improving the extent of fibre digestibility earlier in the monogastric life cycle.

 

Dr. Mike Bedford, Research Director at AB Vista added: "Our improved understanding of how beneficial fibre breakdown products can effectively "train" the large intestinal microbiome to digest fibre, in particular xylan, means that we can focus our product development on enhancing this effect. What does this mean? It means we need to focus on products that deliver specific fibre end products to the animal, rather than considering multi-component fibre-degrading enzymes to degrade polymeric structures.

 

Our new product Signis, works to make xylan more susceptible to attack by fibre-degrading bacteria and it is the combination of training the bacteria to attack fibre, and providing a more digestible fibre, that results in more consistent and significant response with this product."


Dr. Bedford further highlighted that "the current crop of NSPases on the market fail to address all of the above and hence why AB Vista has developed SIGNIS".
 

"This product consistently improves fibre digestion and thus improves intestinal health in a manner that no NSPase or multienzyme can today. Consequently, we believe we are moving out of a commodity area and into an exciting new field of research which will hopefully yield even better and more efficacious products for nutritionists," he said.
 

In Asia, SIGNIS is currently available in South Korea, Australia and New Zealand and is currently undergoing product registration in other parts of Asia, including the Philippines, Thailand and Malaysia.
