Use of US soybean meal as feed encouraged as fears of swine fever linger
The US' United Soybean Board (USB) said that it is monitoring and responding to recent outbreaks of African swine fever in China, as it emphasises the need for safe soybean meal which is mainly consumed by swine and poultry.
In a September 20 public statement, the USB said that US farmers were told to "take extra measures " to reduce the impact of a potential outbreak in the country "by using US-produced soybean meal. The organisation added that the global livestock industry consumes 97% of "all US soybean meal."
"While spread by direct or indirect contact, viruses can live on most surfaces for short periods of time, including feed that comes in contact with infected animals," the USB explained. "African swine fever has not been detected in the United States, although it has spread to parts of Europe. Consequently, US pork producers are being cautioned to take extra care with imported meal or synthetic additives and to consider buying more US soybean meal."
Lewis Bainbridge, chair of the USB, commented that US soybean meal is "a nutritious, reliable product" for animals. As such, he assured that the US soybean industry is "committed to providing this abundant supply of feed for poultry and livestock."
The USB has consistently participated in efforts to control foreign animal diseases, including projects to mitigate and eradicate threats like African swine fever and porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDv).
USB efforts related to pathogens include cross-industry discussions with the board's feed technical team, who will continue to coordinate in light of this latest occurrence.
"US soybean farmers know we are providing global pork producers with a wholesome, quality feed ingredient," Bainbridge said. "Through our checkoff, we are working closely with the pork industry to produce the soybean meal that meets their needs."
