Vietnam's meat production sufficient for local demand
Vietnam's animal husbandry's meat output meets the country's local consumption.
According to the Department of Livestock Husbandry under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the country produces between 220,000-230,000 tonnes of pork and 50,000-60,000 tonnes of poultry every month, and the volume matches with the local demand.
In December and January during the Lunar New Year festival, the local demand of meat increases 10-15% from ordinary months, the department added.
The local animal husbandry is facing a number of challenges, including widespread of animal disease outbreak and high production costs, the country will have no special policies to encourage imports of meat, said department Deputy Head Nguyen Thanh Son.
Currently the ministry prioritises prevention and combat of animal diseases to protect the local production, he said.
Vietnam imported around 40,000 tonnes of meat, mostly pork and poultry so far this year, Son added.
