EU pig production, slaughterings rise in 2nd quarter
EU pig production rose 3% or by 190,00 tonnes to 5.8 million tonnes in the second quarter compared with the same period last year, due to increased slaughterings, according to AHDB Pork.
The pork division of the UK levy body Agriculture & Horticulture Development Board cited statistics showing that pigs slaughtered during the period in review increased by also 3% or 1.8 million head to a total of 63.4 million head. A slight increase (+400 grammes) in carcase weights to 92.2 kilogrammes was also registered.
EU production was noted to be up for much of the year. From January to June, pig meat production increased 4% (+430,000 tonnes) to 12 million tonnes. During this period, slaughterings totalled 130 million head, up 3% (+3.5 million) year-on-on-year.
Increased production in Europe in the second quarter was accordingly driven by Spanish pig production, which totalled 1.1 million tonnes, up 10% (+110,000 tonnes) compared with 2017. Growth in Polish production also remained positive, up 5% (+26,000 tonnes) to total 500,000 tonnes.
Germany accounted for 22% of total EU production during the second quarter, although production was slightly down by 2% (-30,000 tonnes) to total 1.3 million tonnes. This continues a long-term trend of declining production within Germany, with the industry uncertain about the prospects of the sector going forward, according to AHDB Pork.
In recent weeks the EU reference pig price has been rising steadily, up almost 9 cents in the last four weeks. As of the week ending Sept. 2, the price stands at €152.27/100 kg. Despite the recent prices rises, the price remains €18 below the same week in 2017.
