Japan partially resumes pork exports

Japan's agriculture ministry announced on Wednesday that it has recommenced pork and pig skin exports to certain countries and areas, after suspending exports on Sunday following the country's first outbreak of classical swine fever in 26 years.

Japan lifted the temporary ban of pork exports, except for those produced in Gifu prefecture, where the disease was discovered, to Hong Kong on Tuesday and to Vietnam and Macau on Wednesday.

The ministry added, export of pork skin used in leather products to Thailand also became available on Wednesday and explained that it reached a decision to resume pork exports after gaining an approval from the importing countries or it has met the conditions that were previously agreed to, according to an official at the ministry.

Following the outbreak of swine fever, the local government has culled 546 hogs in the centre of Honshu, the country's largest and most populous island.
