Four suspected cases of African swine fever hit Serbia

Four potential African swine fever (ASF) outbreaks have struck backyard pigs in Serbia, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) announced on August 12.

Three of the cases were detected in the Belgrade area and one in the district of Podunavski, the OIE said, citing a report from Serbia's Agriculture Ministry. So far, seven pigs died, with another 114 culled.

This development has led to Bosnia, Montenegro and North Macedonia suspending the imports of pigs, wild boars and related products from Serbia, veterinary authorities of these countries said.

ASF has been spreading in eastern Europe and the European Union's executive last week called the disease an "urgent challenge."
