China lifts embargo on Brazilian beef imports

China has lifted an embargo on beef from Brazil, the latter's agriculture ministry reported after a meeting of the Brazilian president, Dilma Rousseff, and Chinese president, Xi Jinping.

The measure was implemented in 2012 following an atypical case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in Brazil's Paraná state.

China was never a major buyer of beef from Brazil, but has great potential considering demand for beef in Hong Kong, the largest buyer of Brazilian beef with purchases of US$ 1.44 billion in 2013.

In 2012, Brazil exported US$37.768 million worth of beef to China.

Overall, Brazilian beef exports, during the first half of 2014, totalled 762,000 tonnes (US$ 3.404 biilion), according to the Brazilian Association of Meat Exporting Industries (Abiec).
