Philippines a growing market for UK pork; imports seen to hit record high in 2018
According to AHDB Pork, the UK last year shipped nearly 4,500 tonnes of pork and 6,500 tonnes of pig offal to the country. It noted that exports of UK pig meat to the nation have increased eight-fold since 2012, demonstrating its significance to the UK as an emerging market.
During the first five months, the Philippines has also been one of the UK's largest growth markets, with pig meat shipments up by around a third (+1,200 tonnes). Increasing demand from the Philippines has helped drive the increase in UK shipments, the pork division of the UK levy body Agriculture & Horticulture Development Board.
In 2017, the Philippines imported 300,000 tonnes of pig meat, the highest on record. This was a rise of 18% compared with year-earlier levels. This year is expected to surpass the record 2017 levels, with the January-April pork imports already 25% higher and offal imports 31% higher compared with the same period last year.
AHDB Pork cites the latest OECD-FAO outlook as anticipating growth in the Philippines' pork consumption to reach 15.4 kilogrammes per capita in 2017 (+3% year-on-year) and 17 kg/capita by 2027.
