Italy's January-April wheat, corn imports down

Compared with the same period in 2011, Italy's wheat and corn imports fell in January-April of 2012, while exports of other grains and products mostly decreased, Italian cereals body Anacer said on Tuesday (July 17).

Imports of soft wheat fell about 4% to 1.54 million tonnes while corn imports dropped nearly 24% to 0.793 million tonnes in the January-April period, Anacer said in a statement. It did not provide explanations for trade flows.

Grain traders have said a widespread lack of liquidity on the Italian market was a major reason for reduced trade volumes this year as access to bank loans tightened.

Imports of durum wheat used for making pasta fell to 378,881 tonnes in the period from 558,928 tonnes a year earlier.

Total imports of cereals and oilseeds to Italy dropped 11% to 4,945,942 tonnes in the first four months of 2012, worth about EUR1.4 billion (US$1.71 billion), Anacer said.

Exports of rice from Italy, Europe's biggest producer, fell 7.1% to 250,085 tonnes in the January-April period, it said.

Italy's exports of pasta eased 0.1 % to 539,300 tonnes while exports of cereals-based animal feed fell nearly 3 % to 65,310 tonnes.
