Russia bans Belarusian hogs, pork on ASF

Due to an outbreak of African swine fever in the country, Russia has banned hogs and pork from the Vitebsk region in Belarus, Rosselkhoznadzor, the food safety watchdog, said in an e-mailed statement.

The outbreak started on June 19 in the Vitebsk region, which is on Belarus's eastern border with Russia.

Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine also share borders with Belarus.

African swine fever (ASF), a viral disease for which there is no vaccine, is deadly for pigs and harmless for humans, according to the United Nations' Food and Agricultural Organization.
