BASF-YPC kick-starts second propionic acid plant in China

The BASF-YPC joint venture between BASF and Sinopec has started commercial production at the second propionic acid plant at the Verbund site in Nanjing, China, chemicals-technology.com reported.

With a capacity of 30,000 tonnes per annum of propionic acid, the new plant raises the combined capacity of the two facilities to 69,000 tonnes.

The plant will supply products to the local market and its customers across the Asia-Pacific region.

BASF Intermediates Asia Pacific senior vice-president Vasilios Galanos said, "As the population grows and the living standards improve in the Asia Pacific, the rising demand for food and feed has led to an increase in the consumption of propionic acid.

Strong growth in other industries such as pharmaceuticals and agriculture, is also driving us to expand our propionic acid capacity in the region."

Propionic acid is used as a mould inhibitor to preserve food and feed grains. It is also used in the production of pharmaceuticals, crop protection agents, solvents and thermoplastics.

Sinopec Yangzi Petrochemical chairman Hong Jianqiao said, "The startup of this plant not only meets the market demand in the field of food safety but is also in line with the government's commitments to promote the transformation and upgrade of the traditional manufacturing industries, which was re-emphasised during the Two Sessions this year through the key reform priorities."
