The Crown Estate, which owns most of the UK's foreshore, together with the Centre for Environment Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS) and the British Trout Association (BTA), plans to build offshore fish farms for rainbow trout off Cornwall.
This pilot aquaculture project will be the first of its kind in the UK, the Independent reported. At present, the only Cornish fish farms are installed onshore.
Dr. Neil Auchterlonie, of CEFAS, explained, "We are interested in the sustainability of the operation. We are looking at a long-term collaborative agreement with an operator so we can look at environmental impact and fish health."
The European Union is supportive of aquaculture development, seeing it as a means to take the pressure off wild fish.
