Market analysis

After a spectacular increase in the first two weeks, live hog prices fell.

In the north, live hog prices ranged from VND36,000 (US$1.58) to VND40,000 (US$1.76) per kilogram. In particular, prices in regions near the China border such as Son la, Dien Bien, Lai Chau ranged from VND39,000 (US$1.71) to VND40,000 (US$1.76) per kilogram, up VND6,000 (US$0.26) to VND7,000 (US$0.31) compared to last month.

In other regions such as Lao Cai, Hai Phong, Bac Giang, Ninh Binh, Hung Yen,Thai Binh, Vinh Phuc and Thach That, prices ranged from VND37,000 (US$1.62) to VND38,000 (US$1.67) per kilogram, up VND5,000 compared to last month. In Thanh Hoa, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Binh Dinh and Ninh Thuan, prices reached VND40,000 (US$1.76) per kilogram, up VND6,000 (US$0.26) compared to last month. In the southeast such as Dong Nai and Cu Chi, prices hit VND40,000 (US$1.76) per kilogram, up VND8,000 (US$0.35) compared to March.

The price increase across the country was mainly due to the sharp decline in live hog supply. Even though Vietnam's pig herd size was down since farmers reduced production, pork supply was sufficient for consumption.

According to customs statistics, Vietnam imported US$1.5 million worth of pork in March, an increase of US$1.22 million compared to February and up 4% compared to the same period last year.

Market forecast

Although live hog prices are on a general uptrend, farmers have been alerted not to be in a hurry to increase production as the pork supply is sufficient to meet demand.
