Pellet mill gearbox lubrication
by KOH Hui Meng
THE oil in the pellet mill gearbox performs different tasks. First and foremost is to prevent metal-to-metal contact in the gears and bearings. Also, it has to protect against corrosion, transmit heat from high friction spots, and lubricate the seals.
Basically, there are two kinds of oils that can be used in this application. Firstly, there are R&D gear oils. These have additives that protect against rust and oxidation. Secondly, there are EP gear oils that have the same additives as R&D oils as well as EP additives that maintain an oil film under extreme pressure. This is often the preferred kind because it reduces wear of the gearbox.
Gear oils are available in different viscosity grades. Choosing the right viscosity grade will depend on the operating temperature of the oil, in combination with the speed of the gears. For all our pellet mills, we recommend an ISO viscosity grade of 220.
