Russia to protect pork, poultry production from WTO's negative effects

After joining the World Trade Organisation (WTO), the Russian government should protect domestic pork and poultry production from negative consequences anticipated and ensure opportunities for continued growth in these industries, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Wednesday (Mar 28).

Poultry production doubled recently, Putin said at a meeting with farmers in the Voronezh Region.

In 2006-11, pork production in Russia rose by 41%, the Agriculture Ministry said earlier.

Russia is to become a full member of the WTO in August when documents for its accession are to be ratified by parliament.
