BASF advances sustainable vitamin production in Korea

The BASF production site in Gunsan, South Korea, produces vitamin B2 using vegetable oil and the fungus Ashbya gossypii. A high-density vitamin B2 fermentation residue (BFR) is generated during downstream processing. In order to validate BASF's commitment to sustainability, the plant has reviewed and refined the production process in recent years to promote the sustainable process at the site.

As a result, BASF Korea recycles BFR as a vitamin B2 fermentation medium and recovers its nutrients for animal feed mixing components that are offered to the local feed market in Korea. The innovative BFR development saves resources and lowers waste treatment volumes. Both aspects reduce the environmental impact while contributing to advanced sustainable production.

BASF Korea collaborates with its value chain partners in the livestock industry to ensure the successful progress of BFR business development. The objective of this collaboration is to overcome the present challenges of BFR treatment and to develop innovative and profitable solutions for the animal nutrition industry. It is also a matter of realising the sustainable visions of various players along the feed and livestock production value chain. BASF's BFR product development delivers economical and pragmatic benefits with measures that optimise the use of technical and environmental resources.

The Verbund concept developed by BASF interlinks production plants, energy flows and infrastructure. Expertise and customers are also intelligently interconnected. By-products are used as raw materials in other plants to conserve resources and energy and to minimise emissions and logistics costs, improving operational excellence and creating value as one company. Sustainable vitamin B2 production in Gunsan is an example of BASF's successful Verbund concept and reflects the BASF strategy where sustainability is firmly embedded and integrated into the core processes.
