Vietnam builds pork trade floor to boost domestic swine industry

The People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City has announced the new project to restructure the domestic swine industry between 2021 to 2025, reported Saigon GiaiPhong Online.

The project aims to create high quality breeding stock on par with imported pork and create value chains from production to consumption.

According to the Department of Industry and Trade, the pork trading floor will be a transparent, public area for farmers, aimed at developing the domestic pork industry and increasing exports.

The new trading floor will also serve as a way for domestic enterprises and cooperatives to create a brand label for local pork products.

The People's Committee said by 202,5 the country will maintain its swine herd at 200,000 total with sows accounting for 20%. Of that, there will be 2,750 great grandparent stock or 5% of the total sow herd.

Piglet herd value will hit 1.09 VND trillion (~US$47 million; 1,000 VND = US$0.043) by 2021 and surpass 1.34 trillion VND (~US$57 million) by 2025.

Other aims outlined by the People's Committee include an average swine farming scale of 200 swine per household with VietGAHP certification for these farms above 90 to 95%, as well as 100% of all farms to strictly comply with the country's environmental protection regulations.
