Number of pigs in Ireland up 2.6% in 2019; cattle down 0.5%

 


Ireland's pig population as of December 2019 increased 2.6% to 1,613,300 from the previous year's 1,572,200. Breeding pigs increased 1.4% from 143,000 in 2018 to 145,00 in 2019. Non-breeding pigs increased 2.7% to 1,468,300 from 1,429,200 in 2018.


The total number of cattle decreased by 33,800 (-0.5%) to 6,559,700 from 6,593,500 in 2018. The number of dairy cows increased by 56,700 (+4.1%), while other cows decreased by 25,500 (-2.6%).


The total number of cattle less than 1 year old decreased by 37,500 (-1.9%), while cattle 2 years old and over (excluding cows and bulls) increased by 23,000 (+5.2%).


Meanwhile, the total number of sheep in 2019 was 3,908,300, an increase of 109,800 (+2.9%) on December 2018 (3,798,500). The number of Other sheep increased by 76,700 (+6.9%) and breeding sheep increased by 33,100 (+1.2%).
