Brazil is third biggest feed producer, Alltech survey shows
Alltech's global feed survey has revealed Brazil to be the world's third biggest feed producer as well as the leader of the sector in Latin America, according to Reuters.
The country produced close to 70 million tonnes of animal feed last year while top producers, China and the US, produced 187 million tonnes and 173 million tonnes, respectively. Both countries' volumes took up a third of the total global output, their share spurred by growths in the pig, broiler and dairy feed sectors, and Europe and Asia-Pacific.
In addition, low production costs enable Brazil to strengthen its position as a top meat producer and exporter. The country's total chicken and beef exports reached a combined US$13.5 billion in 2017, data by trade groups ABPA and ABIEC show.
Based on the Alltech survey, feed output amounted to an estimated 1.07 billion tonnes worldwide in 2017. For the last five years, the feed industry had expanded 13%, which was equivalent to an average increase of 2.49% yearly. The sector is currently valued at US$430 billion.
The survey also expects good prospects for the industry, with its growth bolstered by higher consumption of meat, milk and eggs, which rose in tandem with better living standards.
