China officially approves all US live poultry imports

China's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs has approved all United States poultry products for export to the country, which includes breeding birds, reported Reuters.

This follows the approval of United States poultry meat exports to China in November 2019 following the Phase 1 US-China trade deal.

China has originally banned imports of United States poultry because of avian influenza outbreaks. China's poultry producers were affected by the ban as they required the breeders to supplement stock.

Li Jinghui, China Poultry Association said United States companies such as Aviagen and Cobb-Vantress will benefit from the approval of live bird imports. Both companies are part of the biggest poultry breeders in the world.

US live poultry imports reached US$38.7 million in 2013, lower than other poultry products including chicken feet.

Li said lifting the ban on United States live poultry may not have a major impact as Aviagen and Cobb have boosted poultry breeder production in other countries, such as New Zealand to meet China's increased demand for meat.

Shandong Yisheng Livestock and Poultry Breeding and Fujian Sunner Development are some of the local companies who have started poultry breeding programmes to lower import dependence.
