India's 2012-13 oilseed output down 12%

India's total nine oilseeds production for 2012-13 was seen at 29.45 million tonnes, down 12% from the target output of 33.5 million tonnes, representing a marginal decline of 1% from 29.8 million tonnes harvested in 2011-12 season.

This is according to India's Ministry of Agriculture's second advanced crop estimate released on February 8.

Estimates for most oilseed crops were below the government target. Groundnut output was estimated at 5.8 million tonnes against the target of 8.7 million tonnes, sesamum at 0.75 million tonnes (0.77 million tonnes), nigerseed at 0.08 million tonnes (0.17 million tonnes), rapeseed at 7.37 million tonnes (8.19 million tonnes), linseed at 0.14 million tonnes (0.28 million tonnes), safflower at 0.09 million tonnes (0.28 million tonnes), and sunflower at 0.58 million tonnes (1.16 million tonnes).

Only two oilseed crops were estimated to beat the government production target, namely soy at 12.96 million tonnes (12.55 million tonnes in target) and castor seed at 1.72 million tonnes (1.39 million tonnes).
