Market analysis

In the north, live hog prices ranged from VND27,000 (US$1.20) to VND35,000 (US$ 1.55) per kilogram, up VND5,000 (US$0.22) compared to last month. In central Vietnam, prices ranged from VND27,000 (US$1.20) to VND33,000 (US$1.46) per kilogram, up VND1,000 (US$ 0.045) to VND2,000 (US$0.09). In the south, prices ranged from VND26,000 (US$1.15) to VND29,000 (US$1.28) per kilogram, not recovering yet. Farmers are still making losses.

As of October, Vietnam's swine herd size was 27.4 million head, a reduction of 5.6%, and slaughter output reached 3.7 million tonnes, an increase of 1.9% compared to the same period of last year.

In general, except for the strong recovery in July 2017, live hog prices mostly declined during the year due to the sufficient supply. Prices increased slightly in November. However, it was not a remarkable increase as expected.

Market forecast

Live hog prices are expected to rise ahead of the Tet holiday (to fall in February 2018) and many producers are preparing to ramp up supply for the holiday period.
