China Live Hog Weekly: Limited demand softens prices (week ended Jan 4, 2018)

An eFeedLink Exclusive

Price summary

Prices moved lower.

Market analysis

Hog prices remained soft before and after the New Year holidays, as slaughterhouses were reluctant to increase stockpiles. However, with hog quantity low, price falls were limited to 0.28%. Pork carcass prices inched lower 0.10% to RMB21.03/kg.

Market forecast

With pork demand increasing at a slower-than-expected rate, slaughterhouses will limit stockpiles prudently. Nonetheless, in the northern parts of China, where deliveries are hampered by the snowy climates, prices are likely to strengthen amid tightened supplies.
