Integral livestock systems attuned to evolving needs

By Arianne M. Perez

Complete and up-to-date livestock systems have become major necessities to closely respond to livestock producers' ever expanding needs in a time of burgeoning demand for meat protein and challenged supply.

With Asia-centralized facility in Penang Malaysia, Cumberland Asia cuts down logistics delays and provides integral systems to the Asian livestock sectors to attain production at its highest potential. Cumberland is the poultry equipment manufacturing division of the US-based GSI Group, which supports a global dealer network and operates sales and manufacturing facilities throughout the US, Malaysia, Canada, Brazil, China, Mexico, South Africa and Poland.

In May 2005, the GSI Group was acquired by Boston-based Charlesbank Capital Partners, a private investment/equity firm. As of August 2007, Centerbridge Partners, L.P. became the majority interest holder of GSI Group with Charlesbank continuing to hold a significant stake in the GSI Group.

Another segment of GSI that focuses on livestock production is the Automated Production Systems (AP) which manufactures a wide variety of swine production related equipment including feeders, confinement, feed storage & delivery, ventilation systems (for dairy and horticulture applications as well), heaters, controllers and accessories.

Tommy Chew, division sales manager of Cumberland Asia, said that in order to serve companies in Asia better, the division has a warehouse in Malaysia to shorten the lead time from approximately two to three months delivery period from the US to two to four weeks from Malaysia, straight to neighboring Asian countries. The company believes in providing complete feeding systems immediately, he reiterated.
